I think a forum would be a big improvement over the mailing list as long as
you can find a couple people willing to help with the administration of it.
I think it would really help with searching for answers to questions that
have been asked a lot...maybe even lead to creating some sticky posts with
an updated FAQ of sorts.

Not sure if there's a historical reason behind the mailing list... but..

Would anyone prefer a phpBB or vBulletin forum?

There seem to be a lot of repeat questions on the list lately.  And
currently messages to the list are removed after 90 days..
