This is allowed although not explicitly stated - the only stipulation is that the encoding of the audible metadata must match the MIME type of the audio file.

If desired you could encrypt the audible metadata by encrypting the ATXT frame itself (in which case the frame header encryption bit would be set). I'll add a note to clarify that encryption of the track audio data is decoupled from encryption of the ATXT frame audio data.
